The Diagonal Mar Park in the new 22@ neighbourhood was created in 2002 on a 14-hectare site that previously housed an old factory. The minds behind the project were the husband and wife team of architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue. They opted for a design which was both architecturally very original and also sustainable. The park is divided into different areas which are meant to evoke different feelings, while at the same time uniting around a common theme – water. There is a large children’s play area, a lake with sculptures that spray water, a pathway over water, handcrafted ecosystems and grand tubular structures. These last are the real focus point of the park, spanning as they do most of the area like a giant spider’s web. Their arresting design also serves a hidden purpose: to carry water for irrigating the gardens. Hanging from them are enormous flowerpots whose style is reminiscent of Gaudí’s trencadís technique. Without a doubt the huge silver structures are the main attraction of this unique and sustainable park.
